5 Survival Products That Need to Be in Your Emergency Kit

A survey put out by Columbia University suggests that two-thirds of all families aren’t prepared for a disaster.

If that isn’t alarming enough, half of those families didn’t have confidence in the government to help them or reach them in time.

If you fall into either category, you’ll want to take matters into your own hands. Preparing your own emergency kit filled with survival products is an easy way to keep you and your family safe.

Here are five survival products that your emergency kit absolutely needs.

1) First-Aid Supplies

The staple of any emergency kit will always be first-aid supplies.

Minor injuries such as scrapes and cuts can become far worse if exposed to certain bacteria. It won’t take much for a small cut to become infected, making it a much bigger issue.

Your first-aid supplies should include:

  • Bandages
  • Gauze
  • Medicine (including prescription medication)
  • Skin Creams
  • Eyewash
  • Rubbing alcohol

That isn’t to say your kit can’t (and shouldn’t) include more, but these are the bare minimum survival products you’ll want handy.

2) Flashlights

When things get dark (figuratively and literally) you’ll need to provide a light for your family.

Having the ability to illuminate your surroundings is practically indispensable as it has the potential to prevent serious or even fatal injuries.

We recommend grabbing an LED flashlight or two, as well as some extra batteries.

You can find tons of great, affordable options on Amazon or at your local hardware store.

3) Radio

Be it from an attack or a natural disaster, losing connection with the outside world is a terrifying experience.

But with a hand-cranked radio, you can stay updated on the latest information about your surroundings. Knowing what’s coming your way or when you need to evacuate may just save your life.

4) Food And Water

In an emergency situation, you likely won’t have access to a stove or microwave. That’s why your survival kit needs to include perishable food items like granola bars, canned goods, and bottled water.

Don’t forget to include a multi-tool with a can opener, too.

5) Cash

Our final piece of advice is a bit unconventional. However, it makes sense upon reflection. If things get hairy, there won’t be any time to head to your nearest ATM and take out money.

Storing a little bit of money in your survival kit may seem like a silly move. But in a computer-free environment, it could mean the difference between buying a ticket to safety and fending for yourself.
